Sister Writes offers three sessions per year: fall, winter, and spring. Each session runs for 12 weeks and takes place at the Gladstone branch of The Toronto Public Library. Our sessions are usually on Tuesday mornings, for two hours. We provide all supplies – notebooks, the program reader, pens, and pencils – as well as tokens and snacks to keep energy high. We open registration six weeks before the start of each session. So, in August, we begin accepting registration for the session starting in September. Registration is on a first-come first served basis.

Our workshops are designed for all levels. Through instruction, guided exercises, group activities, and heaps of hands-on practice, you’ll learn fundamentals of fiction and memoir writing, including topics such as voice, style, character, plot, and setting. We’ll also pay close attention to language and vocabulary, with mini workshops along the way on grammar and usage. Overall, in the session you can expect to:

  • Practice writing in a variety of styles, with confidence
  • Explore writing in various styles, on the way to discovering your personal writing style
  • Write poems, stories, short articles, personal essays, narratives, memoir and much more
  • Meet and work with professional authors, poets, and journalists
  • Produce a saddle stitched magazine
  • Organize a public magazine launch

By the end of the session, you’ll have completed one short story, lots of short, short stories (flash fiction) and have given and received feedback in a supportive and constructive workshop setting.

To see if we’d be a good fit for you, read through our Programs page. Then, if you’d like to register, you can drop us a note at or contact us by phone at 416-926-9762 x 239.
