Sister Writes is delighted to announce a new program: Coffee Shop. Inspired by the serendipity of afternoons we’ve spent writing in the glow of a buzzing coffee shop, notebook and pen in hand, these sessions will nurture and inspire your individual writing practice through dedicated time to just write. Whereas our flagship program, The Writing Workshop, is formal — with instruction, guest writers and mentors, and editorial support leading to publication — Coffee Shop is all about the writing process, not the product. So, at Coffee Shop, you’ll write for the sake of writing, re-discover the joy of the writing process, and the magic of writing for love.
Coffee Shop will launch this May and run for eight weeks. Sessions will be loosely facilitated – opened and closed – by experienced Sister Writes peers, but there is no formal instruction. No experience is necessary and all skill levels are welcome.
Sister Writes is a creative writing and literacy program dedicated to honouring the wisdom and experiences of women in downtown Toronto. Founded by writer Lauren Kirshner in 2010. Hailed by The Toronto Star as a groundbreaking program, and the winner of a 2018 ArtsBridges Award for community arts education excellence, Sister Writes is one-of-a-kind in Canada. Since 2010, our longest running program, The Writing Workshop, has provided over 300 free creative writing workshops in the community for budding women writers.
Empowering, inclusive, and hands on, Sister Writes is dedicated to the principle of breaking down barriers to arts, one story at a time.
